The powerline technician apprenticeship

PLTN

Industry-leading training to power the future of Ontario’s electrical utilities industry

IHSA is one of just a few designated providers of all four levels of the powerline technician (PLTN) apprenticeship in Ontario. Our expert instructors deliver in-class and hands-on training at purpose-built facilities—to help the next generation of electrical utilities workers build their careers and power long-term growth across the province.

Watch the videos below to learn more about how IHSA’s PLTN training gives powerline technicians the knowledge and skills to work safely, efficiently, and effectively.

IHSA’s PLTN apprenticeship

IHSA’s PLTN apprenticeship is a pathway to success—and safe work—in an essential skilled trade. Participants gain practical skills and technical knowledge aligned with the needs of industry and the requirements of the Electrical Utility Safety Rules and Occupational Health and Safety Act. At the end of the four-level program, graduates are confident, capable technicians who are ready to contribute to the building and maintenance of critical infrastructure for years to come.

Learn from the experts

IHSA instructors have decades of experience working in the electrical utilities sector. They teach up-to-date, field-tested methods, guiding apprentices through complex work tasks under the same conditions—and with the same equipment—they’ll encounter on the job. With IHSA experts at their side, learners gain an understanding not only of how tasks are performed, but why safety, precision, and teamwork are critical in powerline work.

Build safe-work skills in a safe environment

The PLTN program’s small class sizes ensure that apprentices can learn and ask questions with confidence. Classroom learning is balanced with hands-on training at IHSA’s purpose-built facilities, with instruction that always emphasizes hazard awareness and safety-first decision making. Whether they’re practising safe pole climbing or working on a three-phase system, apprentices can focus on mastering job procedures in a controlled setting, without pressure, so they’re ready to apply them back at the jobsite.

Get training and resources throughout your career

IHSA supports powerline workers long after their apprenticeship ends. Courses on confined space entry, rubber glove techniques, and much more are delivered at IHSA training centres or directly at member facilities. And numerous free and low-cost resources, developed with industry input, are accessible at IHSA.ca. From refresher and specialty training to supervisor programs, IHSA helps electrical utilities workers stay current and safe as they progress through their careers.
